You're OK - Bleeding, bruising, and/ or swelling is not uncommon. You may feel stinging, burning, or aching for several days. During healing secretion of a whitish-yellowish fluid is normal and forms a crust. It is not pus. Also, once healed you may secrete a semi-solid white substance called sebum; again, this is not pus, but indicates a healed piercing. Piercings tend to have a series of "ups and downs". Be patient and keep cleaning throughout the entire healing period.
AVOID - Alcohol, peroxide, Betadine, or Hibiclens as they can hinder the healing process. Do not apply ointments such as Bacitracin, Neosporin or any triple antibiotic. They seal out oxygen and can cause complications. Do not use band-aids, but if necessary use a sterile dressing. Do not immerse your piercing in water and minimize sun exposure for 2-6 weeks.
CLEANING - Clean your piercing once a day with a mild liquid antimicrobial/germicidal medicated soap. Inferior alternatives such as liquid antibacterial soap should be diluted with distilled or bottled water. In the shower wash your body first and clean your piercing last. Use Q-tips to help remove any crusty material from the jewelry. Apply the cleaning solution to your jewelry and gently rotate or move the jewelry to effectively clean the interior of the piercing. Rinse completely. Do not use towels or hair dryers to dry pierced areas so as to avoid lint or bacteria from possibly entering the piercing. Sea salt soaks at least once a day can expedite healing. Dilute 1/4 teaspoon of salt in 8oz. of warm distilled water in a clean cup. Invert the cup over the piercing forming a vacuum and soak for a few minutes. Use a cotton ball or gauze pad soaked in the sea salt solution for difficult placements areas.
